When I first came across the vintage grain sack advent calendar bags, from the 2012 Holiday Issue of Souvenir Magazine, I knew I wanted to make them for my girls. Maria, from Dreamy Whites blog, shared not only the advent bags, but other beautiful Christmas crafts made from vintage grain sacks as well. You can still purchase a digital version of the Holiday issue for only $1.95. Here is a photo of Maria's advent bags, which I used as my inspiration in creating my own.
I came across these kitchen towels at Sur La Table, on clearance, and knew they would be a great substitute for the grain sacks. I purchased eight towels which were enough to make 24 bags, 5" x 7" in size.
By rotating my pattern on the towels, I was able to position the stripes to create different designs on the bags. You can also take advantage of the hemmed sides to cut down on your sewing time.
For this set, I used silver paint to stencil the numbers 1-24. The font was Lucinda Fax.
For my second set, I chose towels with an ivory background so the girls would each have different colored bags. White paint was used to stencil the numbers and these towels were purchased from World Market. (I believe they are still in stock.)
